Coeliac Disease Awareness
Did you know that coeliac disease affects approximately 1 in 70 Australians? This autoimmune condition, often undiagnosed in children, can lead to serious health issues if left untreated. In recent years, diagnoses have significantly increased, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and understanding.
Coeliac disease can develop at any age after gluten-containing foods are introduced to a child’s diet, typically around 6-9 months of age. However, it’s important to note that symptoms can vary widely and may not appear until later in childhood or even adulthood. It’s crucial to be aware of the signs and symptoms of coeliac disease in children, such as:
- Digestive issues (diarrhea, constipation, bloating, abdominal pain)
- Poor weight gain or weight loss
- Fatigue and irritability
- Delayed growth and development
- Mouth ulcers
- Anaemia
Early diagnosis and a strict gluten-free diet are essential for managing the condition and preventing long-term health complications.
